Who may need extra magnesium?

magnesium_lg.pngWhile magnesium supplementation can be used by normal, healthy adults, supplementation can especially benefit those that have specific health problems of medical conditions. These health problems will have or have the potential to possibly lead to an excessive amount of magnesium loss or will lead to the limiting of magnesium absorption.

Some of these health problems can include the following conditions.

Those taking certain medicines like diuretics, antiobotics, and anti-neoplastic medications. An example of these medications includes Bumex, Edecrin, Lasix, Amphotericin, Gentamicin, as well as Cisplatin.

If you have a case of diabetes that is poorly-controlled, you may benefit from magnesium supplements as diabetes can lead to a loss of magnesium because of associated hyperglycemia.

Alcoholics can benefit from a supplementation in magnesium. Low blood levels of magnesium can occur in about 30 to 60% of alcoholics, with nearly 90% of patients experiencing alcohol withdrawal experiencing a loss of magnesium.

Those with chronic malabsorptive problems like Crohn’s disease, regional enteritis, gluten sensitive enteropathy, and intestinal surgery can possibly lose magnesium through diarrhea and fat malabsorption.

Older individuals can benefit from taking magnesium as they are at a greater risk for deficiency. A survey performed last decade by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys suggested that older adults have lower dietary intakes of magnesium than younger adults. Also, magnesium absorption decreases as you get older.
