Types of Protein Supplements
Protein supplements are extremely useful for those that are participating in a muscle building program. The reason for this is because weight training puts an additional burden on your muscles, making them require extra protein to repair and grow back. Some studies have indicated that protein can help boost your metabolism and suppress your appetite — making weight loss a potential benefit as well.
While it is possible to consume protein through your diet, protein supplements are normally a quicker, more convenient source.
So, how can you get whey protein? Well, it comes in a variety of different forms and types. These can include powders, bars, shakes, and drinks. The different types of protein available vary and can include the following:
Whey Protein
By far the most popular type of protein supplement because it’s absorbed very quickly once taken after a workout. It’s also considered to be the most efficient type of protein because it has the highest biological value of all proteins — because of this, it promotes the greatest lean muscle gains. The major drawback of whey protein is that it’s only active immediately after consumption, it’s benefits quickly disappearing.
Casein
This type of protein is comparatively rich when matched with whey, meaning it takes longer for your body to absorb. It’s beneficial to consume casein right before you go to bed or on days when you’re not going to be doing any weight training.
Egg/Soy Protein
As the name might suggest, these kind of proteins comes from mainly natural ingredients. They are not as rich as casein supplements but they are much easier for us to digest. Egg and soy proteins also come with many unique benefits, such as soy being one of the main aspects of a vegetarian’s diet.
While protein supplements aren’t necessary the right choice for everyone, they can help you meet your health goals regardless of what they may be — muscle toning, muscle gain, or weight loss. If you’re currently undergoing any kind of physicial training right now, I highly suggest you do some more research on protein, talk to your doctor, and decide if protein supplements are right for you.
